Dr. Mark Scott is a dedicated physician with a focus on addiction and emergency medicine. Initially starting his career as a full-time emergency room physician at a major urban tertiary care center, he practiced a broad scope of emergency medicine for approximately nine years. However, experiencing burnout and a need to reinvent his approach to medicine, Dr. Scott shifted his focus towards treating vulnerable patients, particularly those with addiction issues.
This career pivot led him to work at a charity-run family medicine clinic serving vulnerable youth, enhancing his skills in treating addiction and vulnerable patients. Over the last six years, Dr. Scott has transitioned out of the emergency department, now primarily engaging in outpatient and inpatient addiction work, as well as family medicine for vulnerable populations.
Apart from his clinical work, Dr. Scott also dedicates time to academic teaching, particularly in the field of addiction treatment. He is known for his ability to critically analyze and disseminate research findings to junior learners, focusing on evidence-based approaches in addiction medicine.
Dr. Scott also manages a multidisciplinary team focusing on complex addiction cases, working closely with psychiatrists and other specialists. He is involved in Calgary's opiate dependency program, addressing severe forms of opiate use disorder. His contribution to medical education and addiction medicine reflects a deep commitment to evolving patient care and physician training in this challenging field.
